The Dutch flotilla are coming…
Fenland District Council’s Wisbech Yacht Harbour is playing host to a Dutch flotilla of yachts, who will be given the ‘red carpet’ treatment when they tie up at the state-of-the-art new pontoons on Monday (28th May).
A packed line-up of visits and civic receptions have been organised to show the Dutch yachtsmen a real taste of the Fens and to encourage other Dutch visitors to sample the delights of an area that was drained and shaped by one of their countrymen, Cornelius Vermuyden.
The visitors will be taken on a guided tour of Wisbech Museum where they will be given a presentation on the history of the drainage of the Fens, followed by a tour of St Peter and Paul’s Church, led by fellow countryman, the Rt Revd Canon Wim Zwalf. The yachtsmen will spend three days in Fenland. They will be taken on a bus tour of the district which will include a pub lunch, a tour of Elgood’s Brewery and gardens and a civic reception in the Wisbech Town Council Chamber. They will also visit Peckover House and gardens and other sites of interest.Cllr Mac Cotterell, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Wisbech Port, said: “It is fantastic to see that yachtsmen from across the Channel are taking an interest in using the harbour as a springboard for exploring the unique environment and history of the Fens.“Peter Harvey, the Harbour Master in Wisbech, has pulled out all the stops to attract visiting yachtsmen to Fenland and this is a clear indication that our charm offensive is working.
Wisbech Yacht Harbour has a lot to offer and people are now beginning to recognise it, which is marvellous.
