From Wisbech to the North Pole

The two young men Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper, who set off from Wisbech Yacht Harbour in March for the first leg of their magnetic Pole to Pole expedition, have arrived at the North Pole after seven days of dog sledding across sea ice with their Inuit guides in temperatures of minus 37.The 50ft steel cutter, Ice Maiden, which was moored in Wisbech, is on its way to rendezvous with the two 19 years olds next month.

The two young men, who recently became the youngest Britons to conquer Everest, are now heading south on their own without their native guides. They have already encountered Polar Bear tracks and they and their dog packs will live off Muskox shot by their Inuit guides on their way to the Pole.

The Ice Maiden will be sailed by Rob and James from Greenland to New York and it will shadow them down to the southern tip of South America where the young men will again talk up the helm and sail across to the magnetic South Pole 75 miles off the Australian coast. The Ice Maiden will then return to Wisbech where owner Terry Neilson will moor the boat permanently. He was so impressed with the facilities and the competitive mooring fees in Wisbech, that his historic boat will make it be based in Wisbech and is sure to become a tourist attraction.
