Yachts ahoy! A life on the ocean waves awaits adventurous Fenland folk

The ‘sail’ of the century is on offer to people in Fenland who would like to sample life at sea on a yacht and return with a Royal Yachting Association Competent Crew Certificate.

The 49-foot training yacht, Offshore Scout, operated by Adventures Offshore is, for the first time, running three trips out of Wisbech Yacht Harbour and anyone wanting to take to the high seas can book through the Wisbech Harbour office (01945 588059). The trips are open to anyone over the age of 15.The first trip, from Sunday 2nd July to Friday 7th July, involves sailing from Eastbourne to Wisbech. The £210 per person for the voyage includes transport to Eastbourne and all food on board as well as the free loan of sailing clothes and equipment. Successful completion of the voyage will qualify participants to receive an RYA Competent Crew CertificateFrom Saturday 15th July to Sunday 16th July the training vessel will conduct an overnight sail, providing a new perspective on the Wash.

This £45 trip is ideal for anyone wanting to get a first taste of yacht sailing. Again the charge covers all food and kit.For the more adventurous, there is a sailing from Wisbech to Holland and back from Sunday 23rd July to Sunday 30th July, weather permitting. The £255 charge covers all food and the loan of all the kit you will need. On completion, participants are eligible to receive an RYA Competent Crew Certificate.

The fact that these courses are coming to Wisbech is a clear sign that the reputation and attraction of Wisbech as a destination or a berth is growing. This interest in Wisbech will only grow, as the Nene Waterfront Project gets off the ground. The development includes a new yacht club, additional state-of-the-art berths and new boat lift and boat maintenance facilities.Cllr Mac Cotterell, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for the port, said: “We are delighted that sailing organisations are looking at Wisbech for the first time as a place where sailing and boating facilities are attractive. The yachting and boating fraternity will boost tourism in the town and Fenland as a whole.”
