All aboard for education afloat

Around 100 local youngsters spent a glorious summer messing about on boats in Wisbech Harbour and at sea as part of the Wisbech Education Afloat programme.Dozens of young people cast off for a life on the ocean waves aboard the 49-foot sail training yacht, the Offshore Scout and dozens more got involved in harbour-based ship activities.

The Offshore Scout, operated by Adventures Offshore, ran three trips out of the Council’s Wisbech Harbour for the first time and they proved a huge success with sailing trips from Eastbourne to Wisbech, overnight sails in The Wash and a seven-day trip from Wisbech to Holland.Around 60 of those taking part in the programme were from the Queen’s School in Wisbech, which played a key role in attracting the Offshore Scout to Wisbech. Most of the youngsters involved in the programme were members of the Wisbech Sea Cadets Unit, TS Falcon.Bidwells, Property Consultants, currently playing a key role in selling the £47 million Nene Waterfront Development to investors, donated £1,000 to fund five Wisbech youngsters to sail aboard the ocean-going yacht.

All those who sailed, achieved their Royal Yachting Association Competent Crew Certificates.Wisbech is becoming increasingly popular with people who like ‘messing about in boats’. With the extension to the number of the berthing facilities at the Yacht Harbour rising from 70 to 128 as part of the Nene Waterfront Development programme, increasing numbers of yachtsmen and power boat sailors from Cambridgeshire and the Midlands are looking to base their craft in Wisbech for security and for convenience.Wisbech is also becoming recognised as the gateway to The Wash, which is an as yet untapped natural wilderness packed with wildlife and fish. This is increasingly becoming an attraction for bird lovers and fishermen.
