University Royal Navy vessels converge on Wisbech

Two Royal Navy vessels caused heads to turn when they converged on Wisbech as part of a university training weekend recently.

HMS Raider, the Cambridge University boat, sailed from Ipswich and HMS Explorer, the Yorkshire Universities boat, sailed from Hull. The two 20m fast patrol craft, each with a complement of 12 undergraduates and six full-time Royal Navy crew, spent an instructive weekend getting to grips with navigating on The Wash.Brother and sister sea cadets, Patrick and Sarah McIntosh steered the Cambridge vessel up river to Wisbech from Sutton Bridge.

The port of Wisbech, run by Fenland District Council, is increasingly attracting attention as a destination with commercial, military and leisure sailors as a direct result of the £47 million project to regenerate the Nene waterfront in the heart of Wisbech. The development of harbour facilities for small craft is a key element in the mixed-use development which is taking shape on derelict land alongside the river in the centre of the town.
