Fenland carries off national regeneration award
Fenland District Council scooped a prestigious national award for the Nene Waterfront Regeneration Project, at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester.
In announcing the award, the judges praised Fenland for ‘punching above its weight’, and for the passion with which the Nene Project was planned.
The Waterways Renaissance Awards run by the Waterways Trust and BURA (British Urban Regeneration Association) promote sustainable waterway regeneration and development across the UK.
The award was presented to the Leader of the Council, Geoffrey Harper CBE, by TV presenter and Vice President of the Waterways Trust, John Craven OBE.
Fenland faced stiff opposition in the Strategy and Master Planning Category from finalists Coventry Canal Greenway, Leeds and Liverpool Canal Masterplan and a regeneration project in Taunton.
The Nene Waterfront Regeneration Project appealed particularly
to the judges because of the innovative way the council acted as
a catalyst to unlock the potential to develop 20 acres of Land
that had been derelict for more than 20 years.
The Council, together with funders, EEDA, English Partnerships, Go-East as well as the project team, has laid the groundwork for the derelict land to be transformed into an exciting and vibrant mixed–use development that is already stimulating an economic boom, not just for Wisbech but across Fenland.
